DESCRIPTION Sand Island Lighthouse Sand Island, AL c1900 The first tower was built in 1838 to mark the entrance to Mobile Bay. In 1859 a newer tower was built to mark the seacoast as well as the bay. Destroyed in 1864 by the Confederates a third tower was completed in 1873 and standing 132-foot tall. Since then erosion is the towers worst enemy.
